National ID anyone?

The breaking news today is perhaps one of the greatest arguments against allowing a government to maintain ubiquitous cross-departmental database of it's citizens. The guilty party today was HM Revenue and Customs who store quite a lot about you. The politicians have been pretty vauge about exactly what fields have been leaked although they are pretty sure it's not being exploited yet. I'm wondering if the National Audit Office are due some opprobrium for not insisting the data was anonymised before it left Revenue and Customs on it's merry way in unregistered post on a CD.
